So True..

"Modern art is what happens when painters stop looking at girls and persuade themselves that they have a better idea." -- John Ciardi

Danya my graphic arts brother sent me this quote, which he says is a profound insight (I think I agree). But what I particularly love about it is that, all unbeknownst to him, John Ciardi is my favorite translator of Dante's Commedia.

Cheers to you, Ciardi!

Actually, I think that painting is beautiful. And I don't usually get modern art.

You ruin all my fun. ;-) If you can get stuff out of modern art that I can't, more power to you and more shame to me! I guess I should take a course in art.

The painting is beautiful--but not on the order of beauty of a beautiful woman.

(Go Ciardi!)

I have long delighted in that quotation... but I'm afraid I don't much like Ciardi's Dante, and never have. Musa's was passible, but nothing to write home about. Esolen finally gave me an English rendition of Dante that sounded to me like real poetry... for which I owe him a great debt of gratitude.

Of course, it helps that I read portions of Esolen's translation of Paradise out loud.
